Overview
Vexels is a design stock with over 70.000 ready-made graphic resources for every purpose. They decided to build a couple of tools to help users in creating their own t-shirt and company logo designs.
Challenge
The initial goal was creating an interactive tool for creating t-shirt designs, with features such as: choosing different fonts and styles, managing the design layers, undo and redo history, grouping and ungrouping design elements, handling user-uploaded images, previewing and downloading the design is ready to print formats, and most importantly, searching the Vexels design catalog. After the success of the T-Shirt Maker, the next step was building in a similar manner a Logo Maker focused for companies, keeping most of the original features but adding amazing new stuff like the logo creation wizard, where the user can specify the company name and industry to preview a curated list of ready to use logo templates.
Solution
The first step was building an MVP for the T-Shirt Maker, to be released to a group of alpha users. After the positive feedback, we turned the MVP into a full-fledged product that has been live since 2019. After the release of the T-Shirt Maker, we started the work on the Logo Maker. We took the existing modular codebase and expanded the capabilities to handle the new design style with minimal modifications on the previous code and focusing mostly on the new features. As of today, the T-Shirt Maker and Logo Maker apps are running basically on the same code, which translates to more stability, faster development times, and the possibility of expanding to different "makers" in the future with minimal work.
Results
The initial project completed the full cycle from a proof of concept to a full product. Properly modularized code allowed a quick development for the Logo Maker and reducing costs. Having one codebase for both products, any feature can easily be shared and more importantly bugfixes too. Initially, we were brought in to do maintenance work for their main site but our involvement quickly grew. We established a strong and ongoing partnership with Vexels since 2018
